Networking Event – Opportunities for the Chemical Supply Chain in Battery Manufacture for Electric Vehicles: 1pm-4pm

Background: The UK is positioned as a world leader in the development and manufacture of ultra-low / zero emission vehicles. The Government’s Road to Zero strategy has set an expectation that by 2030 at least 50%, and as many as 70%, of new car sales and up to 40% of new van sales will be ultra low emission. This builds on the commitment for all new cars and vans to be effectively zero emission by 2040.

Progress on the transition to zero emission vehicles has increased over recent years thanks in part to Government supported programmes such as the Integrated Delivery Programme (IDP) and the Faraday Battery Challenge.

Innovate UK is pleased to announce that the next round of funding for both IDP and Faraday Battery Challenge will be open in September 2018. These separate competitions build on the success of previous funding rounds and highlights Government’s commitment to UK automotive now and into the future.

IDP15 & Faraday Battery Challenge R&D Round 3 Joint Competition Briefing: 9.30am-2pm

This joint briefing event is an opportunity for the complimentary technologies of ultra-low / zero emission vehicles and batteries for automotive applications, to hear about the respective funding competitions.

During the event delegates will hear from UK Research and Innovation, representatives of the UK’s battery sector and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles. Following this will be the main competition briefing sessions that will be held in parallel, in separate rooms. Delegates will then reconvene to hear a presentation on the Innovate UK application process as well as a joint pitch session.

IDP15: This event marks the latest competition in the IDP series. Supporting IDP15 is a multi-million pound investment by The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV).

UK businesses can apply for a share of the available funding to develop zero emission vehicle technologies. As the delivery partner, Innovate UK will manage all new and innovative IDP15 projects that contribute to economic growth and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution on our roads.

At the event you will hear about the scope of IDP15, which includes a dedicated focus around Power Electronics, Machines and Drives.

Faraday Battery Challenge R&D Round 3: This event marks the third round of R&D funding under the Faraday Battery Challenge. It completes the first phase of funding directed towards the development of cost-effective, high-performance, durable, safe, low-weight and recyclable batteries.

Building on the success of projects funded through Rounds 1 and 2, this further investment under the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund is aimed at ensuring that the UK leads the world in the design, development and manufacture of batteries for the electrification of vehicles.

A particular strength of joining competition briefings will be the significant opportunity delegates will have to network with organisations from across the automotive supply chain. You will also have the chance to engage with Innovate UK directly.

This event is aimed and businesses of all sizes (micro, SME and large) academics, RTOs and local authorities with an interest in ultra-low or zero emission vehicles and battery technologies. Organisations who have been involved in any past or current Innovate UK competitions in the automotive space are strongly encouraged to attend.

There will also be an additional regional briefing in Cardiff on 25th Sept for both Faraday Battery Challenge R&D Round 3 and IDP15.

A recent report by E4tech (commissioned by WMG at the University of Warwick and delivered in partnership with the Chemistry Growth Partnership (CGP) and the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) revealed that the UK Electric Vehicle (E.V.) Battery Industry Could be Worth £2.7 Billion per Year for UK Chemical Companies.

The Faraday Battery Challenge Round 3 presents a fantastic opportunity for companies in the chemical sector to work with the automotive sector and other innovators in the supply chain to develop novel chemicals, materials and processes that will ultimately help to de-risk future investments in automotive battery manufacture.
