3. Active listening: Sometimes, people complain or bully because they feel unheard or unacknowledged. Practice active listening, where you give them your full attention and try to understand their concerns without judgment.
4. Reframe negative comments: When faced with constant complaints or blame, try to reframe the conversation in a more positive light. Focus on finding solutions and constructive ways to address the issues at hand.
5. Be empathetic: Understand that the person might be going through challenges of their own. While this doesn’t excuse their behaviour, approaching the situation with empathy can help defuse tension and foster a more constructive dialogue.
6. Address the behaviour, not the person: When addressing the issues, focus on the behaviour itself rather than attacking the person. Use “I” statements to express how their behaviour affects you, e.g., “I feel upset when you constantly blame others.”
7. Document incidents: If the situation persists or escalates, keep a record of specific incidents, including dates, times, and details of what occurred.
8. Avoid being a target: In the case of a bully, avoid engaging in confrontations that could make you a target. Instead, try to maintain a professional distance while still being respectful.
9. Know when to disengage: If attempts to address the situation are consistently unproductive, it may be best to disengage and limit your interactions with the individual as much as possible.
