During 2019, Billingham-based engineering firm ABB continued to support industry by providing clients with safe, reliable and efficient operations. However, the firm has been transitioning during this time to become part of a wider Energy Industries business line within ABB that will allow the company to develop and expand its capabilities and services.
Contracts delivered out of ABB’s North East office with overseas customers has grown significantly over the past twelve months, however, the firm have maintained a strong focus on the delivery of solutions and services locally.
During 2019, ABB won a project for the Dogger Bank Wind Farm that consists of three offshore wind farm projects in the North Sea. Each project will have a single high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) transmission link provided by ABB that connects the wind turbine arrays and the onshore transmission network. This is the first use of HVDC technology in the UK offshore wind market and will provide efficient and stable transmission between the windfarm and the UK transmission network.
With a strong employee retention rate, succession planning continued at ABB during 2019. The firm recruited eight new members into the team, four of who are graduates. Staff are also actively encouraged to join their professional institutes and, as a result, five members of the ABB team achieve charter status in 2019 alone.
ABB’s North East team also support a range of charity projects. During 2019 they raised vital funds for MacMillan Cancer Support, Children in Need and Comic Relief – and supported collections for local foodbanks.
Looking to the future, ABB will focus on the journey towards autonomous operations and continuing development work into innovative solutions for energy transition to achieve the Net Zero Carbon Initiative by 2050.
