Statement from Joanne Smith, CEO of NEPIC regarding the recent SABIC announcement of the closure of their Olefins 6 asset

I was informed by SABIC’s Site Director, that SABIC has decided to close its Olefins 6 asset, located on the Wilton Site, Teesside. During this conversation it was stressed that SABIC would continue operating their remaining assets on Teesside.

Our immediate thoughts are with the dedicated employees of SABIC and their families, some of whom will be directly affected by this announcement.

At this point the impact of the announcement is not fully understood and NEPIC will be working closely with SABIC, its members and broader stakeholders to help those impacted navigate this transition, identify new opportunities and maintain the resilience of our industrial base.

Despite this latest news, Teesside remains a globally significant hub for the process industry, with a strong foundation in chemicals, energy and renewable technologies. NEPIC will continue its efforts to support businesses, attract new investment and champion the skilled workforce that makes our region so attractive.
