Engineering Projects: The Value of Strong Front-End Definition & Governance

Avoiding delays, cost overruns and surprises through effective project phasing and independent technical assurance.

summary

Join TÜV Rheinland for an interactive lunchtime forum exploring the importance of effective project phasing and governance in delivering successful engineering projects.

As organisations invest in energy transition, decarbonisation, resilience, energy security and asset improvement programmes, projects are increasingly expected to be delivered faster, at lower cost, and with greater operational efficiency. At the same time, projects are becoming more complex, involving multiple stakeholders, new technologies, evolving regulations, and increasing scrutiny around safety, sustainability and performance.

In response to these pressures, there is often a temptation to accelerate through the early phases of a project. However, compressing or skipping key stages can lead to costly rework, schedule delays, operability issues, scope growth and increased safety risk.

This session will explore how robust front-end definition, effective project phasing and independent technical assurance can improve project outcomes from concept through to startup. The forum will also provide an opportunity for attendees to share experiences and discuss common project challenges faced across industry.

The session will cover:

  • The purpose and value of effective project phasing
  • Typical implications of skipping or compressing project stages
  • Common causes of delays, cost escalation and late project changes
  • The role of governance, Owner’s Engineering and technical assurance in maintaining project objectives
  • Discussion of common challenges and lessons learned from project delivery
