Consultant, Auditor, Assessor: What’s the Difference? 🤔
I recently came across a post from a Certification Body I work with about the growing number of clients asking if they can help build a management system.
It resonated with me because I often get asked, “Do you issue ISO certificates?”
The short answer is No.
In the world of business, the roles of Consultant, Auditor, Assessor often get mixed up, but they serve very distinct purposes.
🔍 Consultant
A Consultant (like me!) helps you build your organisation’s ISO management system. They have a deep understanding of the ISO standard (or standards) and how to integrate them into your business.
Consultants will:
•            Learn about your business operations, and help you to meet the standard’s requirements.
•            Help you develop policies, procedures, and any other relevant documentation.
•            Train your employees on the standard’s requirements.
•            Identify issues, offer advice, and work with your team to identify issues.
•       Develop solutions, and implement changes.
They are hired by your organisation to guide you through your ISO process.
Think of them as an ISO mentor. They’re on your team, helping you succeed.
They DO NOT issue your ISO certificate.
âś… Auditor
An auditor is your organisation’s quality checker. Sometimes, the Consultant might act as the Auditor. Sometimes the Auditor is someone within your organisation who is independent of the area being audited. Their job is to review your documentation, processes, and systems to ensure you are following your internal procedures, meeting ISO requirements, and that your activities are effective for your business.
Auditors will:
•            Identify nonconformities where necessary.
•            Recommend improvements to enhance efficiency, compliance, and performance.
•            Provide an objective assessment, often required for compliance or certification.
Auditors don’t fix problems—they identify them.
Think of an Auditor as the person ensuring you’re following your Consultant’s guidance and meeting the required standards.
Unlike Assessors, Auditors are on your side. They work for or on behalf of your organisation and focus on helping you improve rather than certification.
Their primary goal is to help you identify and fix issues before an external audit.
đź“‹ Assessor
An Assessor is similar to an Auditor, but with one big difference.
They work for the external Certification Body and their job is to evaluate whether your management system meets the requirements of the ISO standard you are working to.
Assessors will:
•            Review documentation, interview staff, examine processes and records for compliance.
•            Provide feedback and explain the standard’s requirements.
Assessors are completely impartial. They do not offer solutions or help fix issues. This ensures the integrity of the certification process.
Think of an Assessor as the gatekeeper to certifications, if you meet the mark, they’ll give you the green light.**
**Subject to technical review.
Why Distinction Matters
Understanding the difference between a Consultant, Auditor, and Assessor is crucial because each plays a specific role in the ISO certification process. Mixing them up can lead to confusion, wasted time, or even prevent you from getting certified. UKAS (the UK’s accreditation body) and ISO rules are very clear about keeping these roles separate.
Each role brings its unique expertise to the table. From a business perspective, knowing who does what ensures you get the right support at the right time. It also helps avoid conflicts of interest, and ensure your certification is both credible and recognised.
In summary:
• Consultants help you improve.
• Auditors ensure you’re compliant.
• Assessors determine if you qualify.
