Read more >In industrial chemical processes, accurate flow measurement is crucial for maintaining product quality and safety. One emerging technology in this space is clamp-on ultrasonic flow measurement. This technique uses sound waves to measure the flow of liquids in a pipe without direct contact, making it ideal for aggressive or corrosive media like hydrochloric acid (HCl). Ultrasonic sensors are clamped onto the exterior of the pipe, sending sound pulses through the fluid and measuring their travel time to calculate flow rates. This method provides precise, real-time monitoring with minimal installation and maintenance costs, positioning it as a reliable alternative to traditional radiometric methods.
Continuous measurement of hydrochloric acid concentration:
Hydrochloric acid plays a key role in the production of chlorinated aromatics, particularly as a by-product in processes like chlorination and hydrolysis. Maintaining the correct concentration of HCl, typically around 30%, is vital to ensure quality and safety within industrial operations. After HCl gas is dissolved in water to form hydrochloric acid, it is stored in large tanks and integrated into the broader industrial network.
For decades, radiometric density and concentration meters have been used to monitor HCl concentrations. However, these systems require complex maintenance, strict safety regulations, and costly disposal of radioactive materials. Moreover, they rely on γ-emitters, which degrade over time, necessitating frequent recalibration.
The transition to advanced refractometers:
In response to these challenges, chemical plants have turned to more sustainable and reliable alternatives, such as the PIOX® R process refractometer. This innovative device measures the refractive index of hydrochloric acid, providing a linear correlation with its concentration. Unlike older systems, PIOX® R operates using the patented transmitted-light method, offering superior accuracy and process reliability in harsh industrial environments. Its sensor components are coated with acid-resistant PTFE, and the device is built to withstand the corrosive nature of hydrochloric acid.
Reducing costs and enhancing accuracy:
By replacing radiometric technology with advanced refractometers, chemical manufacturers significantly reduce administrative and disposal costs while maintaining continuous and accurate monitoring of hydrochloric acid concentration. This transition not only ensures greater operational efficiency but also enhances safety and compliance in industrial chemical processes.
