Sealing technology and materials development specialist James Walker has released a new elastomer material aimed at customers seeking a hydrogenated nitrile compound for applications in the oil and gas industry.
Vermilion Seven has been formulated to provide enhanced resistance to rapid gas decompression (RGD) at elevated temperatures in addition to good resistance to sour conditions.
These properties are combined with outstanding physical robustness and improved extrusion resistance.
The James Walker stable of high performance elastomers for the oil and gas industry includes a number of materials that have been long-term industry benchmarks.
Familiar names such as FR®25/90 and Elast-O-Lion® 985 have led the field for approaching 30 years, only recently being superseded by the company’s next generation Vermilion® range of materials.
Vermilion Seven is James Walker’s next generation hydrogenated nitrile (HNBR) offering that is intended to take over from the Elast-O-Lion® 101 material which is still specified for its robustness and resistance to rapid gas decompression and has been respected as a top performer in its class for the last 28 years.
Product director Trevor Clarke comments on the launch of the latest next generation material;
“Replacing market-leading materials is no easy task, yet, as with all materials in the Vermilion range, we have taken a significant step forward, improving areas of performance to match technical and commercial demands of the industry without pushing so far that other areas have become compromised in the process.
“Our ability to make these improvements has been facilitated by years of testing under laboratory and field conditions which has given us a detailed understanding of material behaviour under all conditions, especially RGD, temperature and chemical attack.
This new material has been formulated to meet the latest challenging operational conditions but will also offer customers the chance to re-evaluate existing applications, particularly where changes in field conditions mean sealing solutions are now taking punishment that they weren’t designed to withstand.”
Vermilion Seven is approved to Norsok M-710 annex A and B – ISO 23936-2 as well as API 6A FF/HH – ISO 10423. In-house product configured testing has confirmed sealing capabilities down to temperatures as low as -33°C (-27°F), whilst a perfect ‘0000’ rating was achieved in Norsok RGD testing at a temperature of 125°C (257°F).
