An outstanding contribution to industry: Dr. Stan Higgins OBE
Stan has close to half a century’s experience in the industry. After obtaining his PhD from the University of York, Stan was a director at a range of chemical firms both in the UK and overseas. He was Managing Director of a fine chemicals company which won two Queen’s Awards for Industry on the basis of technology and innovation.
In 2003, Stan established NEPIC as a cluster organisation for industry in the North East, leading and developing it into an internationally-recognised body. Under his leadership, NEPIC became the first cluster organisation in the UK to receive European Union accreditation and be awarded the EU Gold Standard for Cluster Management Experience. In 2014, Stan received the EU Cluster Manager of the Year Award.
Stan’s outstanding work for the industry led to him receiving the Chemical Industry Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. He was recognised by The Queen for his services to the chemical industry by being awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours List of 2018.
Determined, passionate and kind in everything he does, Stan had a promising career as a footballer, notching up 40 goals in one season as centre-forward for the university team, including six hat-tricks. Football’s loss was the chemical industry’s gain – Stan has dedicated almost 50 years to the advancement of the industry. Through his retirement he has left a large and irreplaceable hole in NEPIC and the North East chemicals industry. He is a truly worthy winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award.
