Corporate Environmental Award Winner 2022

Sponsored by Anglo American

The Corporate Environmental Award celebrates the achievement of a member organisation who has successfully completed an impactful environmental improvement project within the past two years. The winning organisation receives £2,000 to donate to a local school of their choice to fund a STEM-based environmental project and develop vital, lasting industry-academia links.

Winner: PD Ports
Beneficiary School: Tees Valley Education Trust

The 2022 Corporate Environmental award winner, PD Ports, is one of the UK’s major port groups, owning and operating Teesport, the fifth largest port in the UK and the only major port in England to handle more exports
than imports. As Statutory Harbour Authority for the River Tees, PD Ports has demonstrated its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality across all its Tees-based sites by 2027 – and plans to be one of the first UK ports to do so.

The environmental effects of industry can be seen in most corners of the world, and as a business, PD Ports is continuously working to reduce its impact on the environment whilst, supporting sustainable practices and we remain wholly committed to combatting climate change.

Its latest major energy transition project consisted of refitting four Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes to run on electric power, as opposed to diesel. This investment builds on the fact that a third of their current fleet was already electric, reaffirming their commitment to reducing the port’s carbon footprint. PD Ports are also utilising green electricity across our Teesport sites, which since its implementation in 2020, has reduced their electric CO2 emissions by 4,677 tonnes per annum.

As well as electric power, new alternative fuel sources have been implemented for plant assets and machinery. And last year, PD Ports signed two multimillion-pound contracts with Wentworth Clean Power
Limited to bring two state-of-the-art waste-to-energy plants to Teesside. The two projects, totalling £660 million of private investment, will each create between 250-300 full time jobs during the construction phases, with further permanent jobs available when the facilities become operational.
