Work Experience

Is work experience available in the sector?

Work experience is available at various points in a student’s career and for a variety of durations. Some of these are:

  • NEPIC offers a range of curriculum enhancing activities that range in duration from half a day through to a three day residential programme for students. These are aimed at different aged students and some of them provide opportunities to visit companies in the process sector as a part of the experience. Details of these can be found here.
  • Many companies offer opportunities for secondary schools to spend a week, or sometimes two, working alongside employees in a real work environment. These can be organised through your Connexions contact, or school careers advisor.
  • For those choosing to study at university some of the process industry companies may be able to offer opportunities for students to gain practical experience during vacation periods by working in parts of their business. In many cases these opportunities will be paid. Please contact NEPIC for information about potential opportunities for this work experience.
  • Some students wish to take advantage of a longer period of work experience as part of their studies. Placements are made available for students and typically last from around 3 months through to a year. Competition for places on these placements is very strong and students are advised to start applying early for these opportunities. NEPIC  may be able to help with finding a suitable employer for your particular needs.
