Strategic Direction

NEPIC’s Education & Engagement activities are directed by the STEM Education Group. This industry-led group meets quarterly and includes representatives from some of the key industrial members of NEPIC, alongside representatives of education from around the region. The group also interacts with the National Skills Academy Process Industries and other groups such as Cogent, SEMTA, Newcastle Science City and the National Apprenticeship Service.

The Group has identified its core purpose thus:

Develop, communicate & implement the strategy for raising the uptake of STEM study across the region; enhancing the perception of the process industry and attracting & retaining the best talent into the region’s process industry sector.

The group meeting under the interim Chairman, George Ritchie is seeking new industrial members to ensure that it can retain the strength of direction from industry. Anyone from the industrial membership of NEPIC who is committed to supporting the STEM education agenda in the region and is able to commit to this Group should contact Ian Findley (ian.findley@nepic.co.uk).

Delivery

NEPIC’s education and engagement activities are aimed at enthusing young people about Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics subjects. At an operational level this is achieved by using staff and consultants who are experienced in education and knowledgeable about our industry. There are two advisory groups across the region, one for the Tees Valley and southern County Durham and the other for Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and northern County Durham.

These advisory groups have representation drawn from the industry partners in their sub regional area, along with education, Local Authority and other involved parties, and are under the Chair of an industry partner. These groups are involved in assessing the plans for engaging with education, reviewing past events and identifying ways of improving engagement; ensuring it is relevant to the needs of all stakeholders, along with identifying possible funding mechanisms for the work of the team.

Northumberland STEM

NEPIC has been awarded contracts from STEMNET to provide STEM brokerage and the STEM Ambassadors programme in Northumberland. For more details of this programme please go to our STEM Northumberland  page.

Children Challenging Industry / Primary Science Enhancement Prgramme

These exciting projects are delivered out of the NEPIC office to the whole of the northeast region, by dedicated award-winning teaching staff. They provide exciting ways for children to learn about science and provide links into industry for pupils and their schools to reinforce the learning.
