There are many ways that you can become involved in supporting schools in the region and help to inspire and encourage young people to follow a path to a rewarding career in the future. Some of these are shown below:
Encourage your staff to become STEM Ambassadors! - this is a national programme that links schools to people in business or with experience of the working world who can enrich the curriculum and provide a link between education and the real world. NEPIC holds the contract for this programme in Northumberland and we work closely with the other regional contract holders.
By becoming part of this programme your staff will also benefit from a free CRB check - essential for anyone working with young people, free training on how to interact with pupils and free liability insurance.

This is a great way of developing your staff, particularly younger employees, who will benefit from enhanced self confidence and communication skills as well as being excellent role models for future generations.
Take part in NEPIC’s education & engagement activities! - NEPIC runs a number of activities across the region that engage with schools and provide enhanced learning opportunities for pupils of all ages from primary school through to sixth form and across all of the STEM curriculum areas. Many of these activities use our colleagues from industry as supporters, mentors and judges, and we would welcome volunteers who can enhance our pool of supporters. We also need employers who can provide us with venues for meetings and activities, or that can allow controlled groups of pupils and/or teachers to take part in site visits as part of our activities. Become active in NEPIC’s Education Groups! - NEPIC operates under the strap line; “Led by Industry; Powered by Education!” In order to truly be led by industry we need to have enthusiastic helpers on our three education groups. These groups are as follows:
The STEM Education Group - this strategic level group meets quarterly under the chairmanship of an industry member and has a membership drawn from both industry and education. Its’ core purpose is to: “Develop, communicate & implement the strategy for raising the uptake of STEM study across the region; enhancing the perception of the process industry and attracting & retaining the best talent into the region’s process industry sector”.
The Southern Education Unit Advisory Group - this group meets four times per year in the Tees Valley area and has a role in monitoring progress against specific projects that link to the overall STEM strategy, assess the effectiveness of activities and to monitor and report on activities in the STEM agenda in the sub-region. The membership is made up of a combination of industry members with a commitment to STEM education and representatives of local authorities and education.
The Northern Education Advisory Group - this group meets four times per year in the northern area of the region and has a role in monitoring progress against specific projects that link to the overall STEM strategy, including the STEMPOINT Northumberland contracts, assess the effectiveness of activities and to monitor and report on activities in the STEM agenda in the sub-region. The membership is made up of a combination of industry members with a commitment to STEM education and representatives of local authorities and education.

Inform your staff about NEPIC’s education activities! - Despite all of the marketing work that NEPIC is involved in, there are still schools and teachers across our region that don’t know about our activities or how we can help them. Word of mouth is an excellent means of spreading the good news, so the more your staff know about us the more effectively we can spread the message into schools. If you would like us to provide literature or posters for your workplace please contact the Northern Office Administrator.
Take part in work experience or work placement programmes! - NEPIC receives a number of requests from schools, universities and individuals about opportunities for work experience and placements.
Sponsor NEPIC’s education & engagement works! - NEPIC spends many hundreds of thousands of pounds per year interacting with our future workforce, much of which is not funded by third parties but is taken from our reserves. Several of our activities receive sponsorship, such as our Primary Science Unit and the Technology & Enterprise Den, along with our Children Challenging Industry involvement.
