Substantial Sustainable Capability
The North East of England is a region with a long proud industrial and process industry heritage. It is a place where people who are passionate about science and engineering live and work. In this region there is a sufficient industrial and academic intensity in science based industries to make it one of the premier locations in the world for Process Industry Manufacturing and Research and Development. Indeed the UK 's largest petrochemical complex is based here around the UK 's largest port and storage complex. What is more a third of the UK 's Pharmaceutical GDP is produced in the region.
A thriving Industry
NEPIC companies continue to thrive in the North East of England. Since 2003 there has been over £1 billion of investment, in excess of 40 projects, by multinational companies in the process industry sectors alone. The number of Biotechnology companies has also grown substantially, with a further 20 companies establishing units here over the last three years. They have recruited over 1000 bio scientists in this period and intend to add a further 1000 in the next three years. Success Factors
Companies based here say that the intimacy of service they receive from supply chain companies in this region is a major factor in their success. Similarly the quality of the training, research, graduates and PhD's from the 5 star engineering and science departments within our 5 local universities is of great importance. Most of all they note that range of technologies operated industrially here in the North East of England is second to none. While new technology platforms continue to be established here in particular through the regions Centres for Process Innovation and Life Sciences.
